Dan Batson

C. Daniel Batson, professor of social psychology at the University of Kansas, holds doctoral degrees in both theology and psychology. Batson’s primary research interests are in prosocial emotion, motivation, and behavior, and he is well known for his contributions to the understanding of the social psychology of altruism and the psychology of religion. His theories of “empathy-altruism" and his arguments regarding the limits of traditional distinction of religious orientations have provoked serious debate and have led to a more complex understanding of human social behavior. His publications include The Altruism Question: Toward a Social-Psychological Answer (1991) and Religion and the Individual: A Social-Psychological Perspective (1993), co-authored with Schoenrade, P., & Ventis, W.L.
