Joseph Carroll is professor of English at the University of Missouri – St. Louis where his research interests include Sociobiological Literary Criticism, Victorian Fiction, Darwin and Darwinism. His interdisciplinary approach to literary study, exploring relationships between evolution and literary theory has stirred interest not only within his field, but across disciplines, as his recent work seeks to demonstrate the organic and biological imperatives of literary production and consumption.
His recent works on this topic include two books, Evolution and Literary Theory (1995) and Literary Darwinism: Evolution, Human Nature and Literature (2004) as well as his editing of a new edition of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species (2003).
